ICE in Germany

On Tuesday 6 September we take the ICE from Oma Gisela and Opa Pico in Karlsruhe to the other grandparents Oma Elke and Opa Siegfried in Schieder/ Northrhine Westfalia.

The ICE is the Inter City Express, Germany's fastest long distance train. Even so, the train ride takes us 3 1/2 hours, and that is with only 4 stops in between! A screen in the ICE displays the current speed and next stops, and if the train is on time, running late or ahead. Our train runs at 140 km/h - 250 km/h. There is one special section between Frankfurt and Kassel that has been custom built for the ICE: this section runs through hilly terrain, fields and lonely villages. The tracks constantly go either through tunnels or over bridges.

Kids under 15 years old travel free on these trains, so Mum has afforded us first class seats!
